Pope Francis Announces 21 New Cardinals

Pope Francis after reciting the Angelus at St. Peter's Square on Sunday, October 6, announced the appointment of 21 new Cardinals, including Bishop Pablo Virgilio David of the Diocese of Kalookan and Fr. Timothy Radcliffe, OP.


Among the 21 appointments, one is an Apostolic Nuncio; one is Vicar General for the Diocese of Rome; and fifteen are archbishops or bishops of dioceses.


Other appointments include: the bishop of the Eparchy Saints Peter and Paul of Melbourne of the Ukrainians, a diocese of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church; the archpriest coadjutor of the Basilica of St. Mary Major; Fr. Timothy Peter Joseph Radcliffe, O.P., the former Master of the Order of Preachers who led the meditations for the Synod in 2023 as well as for the current synod; the Undersecretary for the Migrants and Refugees Section of the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development; and the official Responsible for Travel of the Secretary of State.


The 21 cardinal-elects will be elevated during the consistory to be held at the Vatican on December 8, 2024. The complete list is as follows:
