National Mission Congress to Culminate 500 Years of Christianity Celebrations

The 2nd National Mission Congress will be held in Cebu City from April 17 to 24, 2022 to close the celebrations for 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines.


This is a weeklong event on the theme "Gifted to Give" organized under the auspices of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, with the Episcopal Commission on Mission (CBCP Mission) as the lead commission, the support of the Archdiocese of Cebu, the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu, DominusEst and Couples for Christ.


Opening Mass

The weeklong festivities will begin with an Opening Mass on Easter Sunday, April 17, at 4:30 p.m. at the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño de Cebu. This Eucharistic Celebration will be presided by His Excellency Archbishop Jose Palma of the Archdiocese of Cebu, concelebrated by Bishop Socrates Mesiona, Vicar Apostolic of Puerto Princesa and chairman of the CBCP Episcopal Commission on Mission.


International Missiology Symposium

The Congress, which also closes the 'Year of Missio Ad Gentes' or the final theme for 500 Years of Christianity, is divided into two main parts: the International Missiology Symposium and the National Mission Forum.


The International Missiology Symposium will be held from April 18 to 19. This will be led by renowned missiologists Fr. Andrew Recepcion of the Pontifical Gregorian University and Fr. Tony Pernia, SVD. The symposium will include talks by Fr. Danny Huang, SJ of the Pontifical Gregorian University; Fr. John Young, President of Father Saturnino Urios University; and Fr. Stephen Bevans, SVD from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. There will also be thirteen more concurrent sessions or talks by missionaries from all over the world.


National Mission Forum

The National Mission Forum will follow from April 20 to 23, hosted by Margaux Salcedo, editor-in-chief of the Catholic website Dominus Est, with round table discussions to be moderated by Msgr. Esteban Lo, Executive Secretary of CBCP Mission, and missiologists Fr. Andrew Recepcion and Fr. Tony Pernia, SVD.


Leading the National Mission Conference speakers is His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Other speakers include Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, Bishop of Kalookan and president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, and historian Dr. Danilo Gerona of the PSU (WHAT IS PSU?) Center of Trust.During this 4-day forum, there will also be testimonies, roundtable discussions, artistic renditions and a concert from the 29AD Musicionaries.


Closing Mass

The weeklong celebrations will conclude on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 24, with a closing mass to be held at the the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral presided by Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, Bishop of Kalookan and president of the CBCP and concelebrated by Archbishop Charles John Brown, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, among other prelates.
