Cardinal Tagle Sings Heartfelt Song to Our Lady Of Good Voyage

by Margaux Salcedo, Clyde Ericson Nolasco

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, during his homily at the Pontificio Collegio Filippino on May 2, the Feast of Our Lady of Antipolo or Our Lady of Good Voyage, offered a song in prayer to Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage.

He called on Mary to lead us to Christ, the Light, in these times of darkness: "Right now the journey of humanity seems to be dark and turbulent but we believe that it is her son Jesus who is the light and if we don't separate ourselves from Jesus, we will reach the shore. And we ask the Blessed Mother to show us Jesus, the Light... May she call us back to that voyage to Jesus, to each other." He then sang Maria, Bukang Liwayway, a song written and composed by the late Fr. Eduardo Hontiveros. Bukang Liwayway is Tagalog for 'dawn.' The song honors Mary as mother of Christ, who is the Light of the World, and prays that she also light our path so that we do not get lost. She is also described in the song as the Star and asks for guidance in voyage.

Our Lady of Good Voyage is also the patroness of the Pontificio Collegio Filippino, where Cardinal Tagle holds mass every Sunday at 8:00 a.m. Rome time or 2:00 p.m. Manila time.

Maria, Bukang-Liwayway

by Father Eduardo Hontiveros Birheng Maria, Bukang-Liwayway, sinilang mo si Hesus, araw ng mundo. Sana'y ilawan mo aming buhay at landas naming nalilito.

OUR LADY OF GOOD VOYAGE

Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage or Nuestra Señora de la Paz y Buen Viaje, popularly known in the Philippines as the Our Lady of Antipolo or and the Virgin of Antipolo is a venerated 17th-century black wooden image of the Blessed Virgin Mary that represents the Immaculate Conception. It is enshrined in the Antipolo Cathedral. Pope Pius XI authorized her canonical coronation on 13 June 1925, which occurred on 28 November 1926.

The image was brought to the country by Governor-General Juan Niño de Tabora from Mexico via the galleon El Almirante in 1626. His safe voyage across the Pacific Ocean was attributed to the image, which was given the title of "Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage". It was substantiated later by six other successful voyages of the Manila-Acapulco Galleons with the image aboard as its patroness. The statue is one of the most celebrated images of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Philippines.

POPE'S ROSARY MARATHON

On May 7, the Pope's Rosary marathon staged at shrines around the world will be held at the Antipolo Cathedral as the world prays the rosary before the image of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage. This will be at 6:00 p.m. Rome time; 12 midnight Manila.
